In Library House, client’s passion for reading is the motor of the project. In this house located in Tochigi, Japan, for the studio Shinichi Ogawa & Associates the design of an appropriate space for this activity is the starting point for the distribution of the program.
Living/Dining is the central space, has 6m high ceiling and is decisive for the program’s distribution; its northern wall is a high and large book-shelf that will be completely filled with a lot of books. There are no corridors, but you can get into any room in the house from this place. “It is a house for a client who is a great reader,”[…]”He can live enjoying his reading time in this quiet but rich space, feeling the change of seasons thanks to the closed courtyards.”
In Library House, client’s passion for reading is the heart of the project.
In Library House The 6m high cube is wrapped by a lower volume, where the rest of the project is developed. There’s a symmetry in plan and elevation, acting the central space as the axis. This lower volume is articulated in 4 bands: east, with the entrance and more public zones, west, where the main bedroom is, and in the north and south we can find two courtyards as the lights’ entrances inside.
The height’s change between the perimeter space and the central one, improves the decompression’s sensation from the entrance to the main space. It also helps to give rotundity to this place the huge roof’s ripping of the cube that, with both courtyards, let the light comes in the living room and creates an adequate atmosphere for the most special moment in the day: the reading’s one.
