Installation Y, is located in Seurasaari open-air museum of Helsinki, Finland. More precisely in the yard of Niemela Tenant Farm, and it was exposed there until September 15th of 2017, surrounded by vegetation and within everyone’s reach. It was a multidisciplinary and international project of architects and carpenters; Architects & ‘[Emmi Keskisarja & Janne Teräsvirta & Company Architects]; Team Y, [Emmi Keskisarja & Janne Teräsvirta & Company Architects] Tommi Alatalo, Antrei Hartikainen, Kaleidoscope Nordic AS, Irmelin Rose Fisch Vågen. And the main architects and structural design by Emmi Keskisarja, Janne Teräsvirta, Tommi Alatalo, Antrei HartikainenInstallation Y, is an ephemeral construction, built in wood, its provocative shape contrasts with the vernacular architecture of the place. It is surrounded by green vegetation, and generates a social yard that announces the entrance to the traditional farm.
The main idea of Installation Y is that people can use the space freely, and stay there the longest amount of time.
Like another yard more, as if it was a farm, but intended for people. Its curious shape, that reminds a flower, the large amount of wood superimposed, does generates a define use.It is a place of reflection, of contemplation of time and the surrounding space. It is a point of inflection and meeting between the old and the new, between past and present. In turn, the letter Y in mathematics means the unknown as well as being a temporal variable. Therefore Installation Y evokes an uncertain future, towards where Nordic design will may evolve. On a technical level, Installation Y, is also another combination. Digital fabrication and craftsmanship have worked hand by hand to discover the constructive and expressive possibilities of wood.Installation Y, seeks collaboration between architecture and carpentry, the traditional method and digital production, as they need each other to glimpse the future of architecture.
