Interview with Marcus Cederberg

Marcus Cederberg trained in the economic field, in fact he works as manager for the local municipality of Örebro, a town in the middle of Sweden. But since he was a child he was fascinated by what a photography could lead to viewer. Curiosity, expectancy, surprise… That is waht Marcus Cegerberg tries to feed at his Instagram account (@marcuscederberg) through shadows, lines, reflections and soft colours.

Maybe minimalism in photography tries to tell more with less, but Marcus goes further and he becomes minimalism in a nowadays need. Why not take the opportunity to enjoy some calming moments, to reflect over the little things, to explore the peacefulness of minimialistic art?

‘My photography wants to attract your eye and all your senses and challenge your expectations regarding how a building should look like’

How did photography come into your life? And minimalism?

My dad was a photographer and I used to hang out with him in his dark-room developing filmrolls when I was I kid, I have always been fascinated by what you can do with a camera but it was when I got my first iPhone in my hand that it really kicked in.

All of a sudden I could take pics whereever I went, it was quite an experience! I have always appreciated simplicity and my first try as a minimalist was when I was with my family at a public bath. I took a picture of a pair of swimming googles which got several features on Instagram, and I discovered that there was a lot of people out there that appreciated that kind of pics.

Your photography plays a lot with the architecture, what do you find attractive from this world?

In my next life I have to be an architect, it´s amazing how many cool and brilliant architecture solutions are surrounding us in our daily life! And I have really became an architecture fan (even if I’m on an amateur level). Whereever I go I’m always looking not only for motives but also interesting architecture. For me its the combination of both mixing materials, attracting your eye and all your senses and challenge your expectations regarding how a building should look like. Even though architecture has sneaked into my work pretty recently, it has become a substantial part of my work today.

Are the quotes on your Instagram photographs part of the story you want to tell?

Absolutely, they have became a quite significant part of my work, yes. I started out posting just plain quotes with each and every pic but now I really try to add a funny and humorous touch with some sort of connecting to the actual picture. But the quotes are secondary and so they has to be, I want every pic to be able to stand alone as they are and be appreciated without the quotes. But I´m a bit ambivalent here because I would also love to have a exhibition where the quotes accompany each pic.

What steps do you follow to take a picture?

I actually don’t have a specific routine that I follow every time, I´m very spontaneous as a person, sometimes I just stop the car and run out for a pic and sometimes I plan it, checking into apps how the shadows will fall at different times during a day! But when I take pics, I try to take it easy, think of different angles and I normally take a lot of pics before I´m satisfied. Then I take the pics into my Mac and start the editing process.

A lot of negative space does not necessary means that it’s dull and boring, on the contrary! It can be  very exciting. That is what minimalism is about.

What do you think is the need of minimalism nowadays?

I have to quote at my website: We are all living in an era of distraction, everything goes faster and faster and we are  surrounded by a punishing drumbeat of constant input, why not take the opportunity to enjoy some calming moments, to reflect over the little things, to explore the peacefulness of minimialistic art?

What tools do you use for the post production of your images?

Almost all my pics go through an editing process containing Pixelmator and/or Affinity Photo and sometimes Adobe Lightroom. Both Pixelmator and Affinity are exquisite examples of easy to learn software that can make miracles. Affinity are only for the OS X platform ( Mac) but Pixelmator is on both iOS/OS X and is coming to Android and Windows.

What does More with less mean to you?

For me that expression and your website is the essence of what I do, trying to tell as much with as less as possible. Simplicity is also a strong trend worldwide right now when it comes to prints for home decoration. A lot of negative space does not necessary means that its dull and boring, on the contrary! It can be  very exciting. That is what minimalism is all about.
